MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A tornado warning covered Myrtle Beach and Horry County on Sunday as remnants of Hurricane Isaias pushed west of the Carolinas, then expired around midday while a broader tornado watch stayed in place into the afternoon.
The National Weather Service office in Wilmington issued the tornado warning for Horry County until after noon, and county briefings said the Horry warning expired around 12:10 p.m. The same Sunday package also flagged warnings for Marion, Dillon and Robeson counties.
A tornado watch remained until 5 p.m. for the Grand Strand and Pee Dee under the Wilmington office, with excessive rainfall and runoff flagged as flood risks for rivers, creeks and low-lying spots.
Coastal flood advisories warned of minor tidal flooding at high tide, and the weather service said Horry County beaches could see 7-to-10-foot waves with hazardous currents and strong winds.
Horry County spokesperson Thomas Bell said he had not yet received any damage reports as the warning ended, and said he would provide updates if that changed.
Horry County sees occasional tornadoes, typically weak EF0 to EF1 storms associated with tropical systems and squall lines, so remnant tropical days still put Grand Strand neighborhoods on alert even when the storm center sits well inland.
