MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Girls flag football is racing toward South Carolina High School League sanctioning statewide, but Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head area schools are still largely on the sidelines while Midlands, Rock Hill and Florence programs fill rosters this fall.

Statewide coverage notes close to 70 high school teams already in the pilot, well above the 16-team threshold SCHSL rules use for a sanctioned championship, with some athletic directors projecting around 100 schools next season if growth continues.

South Carolina remains in the pilot phase rather than full varsity sanctioning, a status echoed by FlagPlay recruiting guidance that lists the state among NFHS independent and pilot programs still on the pathway to a full High School League sport.

Neighboring North Carolina, Georgia and Florida already treat girls flag football as a sanctioned sport. The Carolina Panthers have backed Carolinas growth with school grants, uniforms and coaching materials, and college programs including Newberry, USC Upstate and Charleston Southern are adding varsity teams.

Nationally, NFHS participation figures show girls flag football jumping from 68,847 to 102,360 athletes in the latest survey year, ranking 10th among girls sports. Thirty-seven states now run sanctioned or pilot programs.

Tourism is the dominant economic engine of Myrtle Beach and the broader Grand Strand, drawing more than 20 million visitors annually, and Grand Strand districts that have not yet launched teams still face coaching stipends, officials pay and field-space hurdles Midlands schools cited this fall.
