CONWAY, S.C. — A person on foot was critically injured Wednesday night in Conway when a vehicle hit them where Highway 544 meets Singleton Ridge Road near Coastal Carolina University. State troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are leading the investigation.
Horry County Fire Rescue crews were sent to the intersection at about 9:30 p.m. and took the injured pedestrian to a hospital. Lanes on 544 were shut while crews worked, and drivers were told to stay clear.
Troopers are getting help from three local agencies: Horry County police, Conway police and the campus public safety department at Coastal Carolina. No details about the person who was hurt had been made public.
The wreck adds to a run of trouble on the four-lane road that splits the campus from student apartments. Early Thursday a bicyclist was hurt near the West Cox Ferry Road junction, and back in August a crash at Elvington Loop struck two Coastal students and killed one.
Last month the university and state road officials settled on a package of fixes for the corridor: slower posted speeds, more lighting, improved signage and a crossing built for walkers. The spot where the Wednesday crash happened lies just beyond the section set to get those changes.
