MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — More than 900 athletes from around South Carolina are headed to Myrtle Beach, S.C., next weekend for this year’s statewide Special Olympics fall games, which run from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1.
Things get going Friday with a Law Enforcement Torch Run that leaves International Drive Ballpark at 5:30 p.m. Runners will carry the flame 5.5 miles to the convention center downtown and light the cauldron there before opening ceremonies begin at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday is the main day of competition. Events are spread across the Splinter Disc Golf Course, Myrtle Beach Bowling Center, the John T. Rhodes Myrtle Beach Sports Center and the Conway Sports and Fitness Center, where free health screenings will also be offered to athletes.
The games include both traditional events and Unified events, in which Special Olympics athletes compete on the same teams as partners without disabilities. Athletes and families will gather that night at the convention center to celebrate the day’s winners.
Teams will head home Sunday, Nov. 1, when the games wrap up. Visitors and residents can expect extra traffic around the ballpark and convention center Friday evening during the torch run.
