CONWAY, S.C. — The start of a new school year comes with excitement and anticipation, but for many families, it also brings a significant financial burden. There is, however, a beacon of relief in Conway, South Carolina where a back-to-school event is relieving this distress for hundreds of families across the state.

The First Choice health plan, run by Select Health of South Carolina, hosted its annual back-to-school supply giveaway on Saturday at Conway Elementary School. The event was designed to help families gear-up for the new academic term, providing over 500 eager young learners with backpacks brimming with essential school supplies.

Fifteenth Anniversary of Tradition

For fifteen consecutive years, Select Health’s First Choice health plan has hosted the event. Over this period, it has donated in excess of 30,000 backpacks statewide. The charity initiative perfectly encapsulates the organization’s mission: providing support to underprivileged communities and easing the financial strain of back-to-school costs.

“Any of our members in the community who are looking to get some back-to-school supplies, the burden is a lot right now with the expense of going back to school. So, we’re here today to try to ease the burden of the expenses,” said Michelle Ehret, the Director for Community Outreach and Communication at First Choice.

Partnerships Elevate Impact

Community commitment isn’t a soloist endeavor. This year, First Choice strengthened its efforts by collaborating with various local organizations such as Conway Medical Center and SC Thrive. These partnerships bolstered the event’s impact while reflecting the communal investment in local education.

One notable participant was a group of generous student volunteers from Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). Not only displaying their spirit of community service, the HGTC students also showcased their professional skills by providing free haircuts to attendees, ensuring children looking sharp and ready for the first day of school.

Giving More Than Physical Gifts

The back-to-school event offered more than the quantifiable value of physical school supplies. It served as an symbol of care, unity, and support in the community. Initiatives such as this not only ease strain on tight household budgets, they also inspire confidence in both parents and children ahead of a big academic year.

Furthermore, the event undeniably highlighted the strength of the community spirit in Conway, South Carolina. It allowed local families to experience the benefits of a strong sense of communal kinship and charity. Indeed, there can be no better learning experience for children as they equip themselves for another year of knowledge, growth, and development.

A Beacon of Hope for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Education is fundamental for societies to flourish. The back-to-school event is undoubtedly one of the many ways communities like Conway can invest in the future – their children. Making education accessible and stress-free for all families should always be a priority. Countless promising futures are being written right now within the classrooms of South Carolina, and every pencil, eraser or notebook donated this weekend will play a part in that story.
