MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — More than 1,000 people turned out Saturday at The Market Common in Myrtle Beach for the Grand Strand Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the yearly fundraiser that pays for research and for help to families dealing with the disease.
Walkers gathered at Grand Park, 1150 Farrow Parkway, inside The Market Common. Registration opened at 10 a.m., an opening ceremony followed at 10:45 a.m., and walkers set out right after it.
More than 112,000 South Carolinians live with Alzheimer’s, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. The walk was approaching a big fundraising mark, said Ashton Hough, who leads the South Carolina Chapter of the association as executive director.
Hough said the association offers free education, support groups and help at any hour for caregivers, and pointed to FDA-approved treatments that are now available for some patients as a reason for hope.
Caregivers and people living with the disease can reach the association helpline at any time at 1-800-272-3900. The chapter is headquartered at 700 Executive Center Drive in Greenville.
