North Myrtle Beach opened Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Saturday with a Paint the Town Purple gathering in front of City Hall.
The GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman's Club set the kickoff for 10 a.m., with music, coffee, donuts, and speakers. A report from Saturday evening confirmed the club had gathered at City Hall for the start of the month. Purple ribbon signs are up along Main Street and are meant to stay through October. Ribbons were also offered for homes, shops, and cars.
Police in the city put this year's domestic-violence caseload at 120, with 57 arrests from those cases. The department has a victim advocate who can connect people with local and state help. Anyone who needs support can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.
The same club has a domestic-violence walk on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Park. A personal account shared at the kickoff is not repeated here.
