CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina University lifted its campus alert early Saturday after police found no active threat following a report of gunfire Friday night around Founders Drive and Highway 544 in Conway.
Conway Police Department officers were called to the area at 9:07 p.m. Friday. The university sent its own alert to students and employees a few minutes later, telling them police were responding nearby.
Conway officers teamed with the Horry County Police Department and the university police force to pin down where the shots came from and to look for a man who reportedly ran from the area. Officials have not said whether he was found.
Nobody was reported hurt. A follow-up campus alert shortly after midnight told students and staff they could go back to normal routines, and the university said officers would stay on campus overnight.
Police asked anyone who noticed anything suspicious to call 911. Criminal cases from Horry County go to prosecutors in the 15th Circuit solicitor’s office, which covers Georgetown and Horry counties.
