MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Close to 500 athletes from every corner of South Carolina spent the weekend competing in Myrtle Beach as the Special Olympics South Carolina State Fall Games ran from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1.
Kelly Garrick, the organization’s vice president of sports, put the count of registered athletes at 496. About 914 people signed up for the opening ceremonies Friday night at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, where the Flame of Hope arrived with the Law Enforcement Torch Run and the cauldron was lit.
Events were split among five venues. Along with the convention center, athletes bowled at Myrtle Beach Bowling Center, threw discs at the Splinter course, played at the Rhodes sports complex in Myrtle Beach and competed at the fitness center in Conway.
Athletes played Masters bocce, bowling for those under 21, disc golf, flag football, soccer and volleyball, with Unified teams pairing athletes with partners where the sport allowed.
Horry County athletes competed as Area 16. Saturday brought a full slate of events, then a Victory Celebration at the convention center that night before teams headed home Sunday.
