SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. — People attending events put on by the Town of Surfside Beach will soon be able to stroll with a drink in hand, at least inside marked zones.
Town Council on Tuesday signed off on the second reading of an ordinance that lets people carry open alcoholic drinks at events the town sponsors. The measure takes effect immediately.
Town staff will decide which parts of an event site let people roam with a beer or cocktail, and the town administrator must approve each designated area. Drinking outside those zones is still not allowed under the new rule.
The ordinance also ties every event to state alcohol rules, including the licenses and permits handled by the Alcoholic Beverage Licensing Division of the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
Council members had earlier talked about making the Entertainment District around the pier a social district, a step that would allow open containers all year. No further details on that idea were available after the vote.
