CAYCE, S.C. — Two weeks after its season was nearly erased, Myrtle Beach High’s girls tennis squad gets to play for a state championship on Saturday. The Seahawks meet Riverside for the Class 4A crown at noon at the Cayce Tennis Center.
The road here was anything but smooth. On Oct. 23, the S.C. High School League ordered Myrtle Beach to forfeit every match, including its first-round playoff win over Bluffton, after ruling the team had not set its singles lineup through the required ladder system of challenge matches.
The school appealed. The league executive committee then voted 11-3 to put the Seahawks back in the bracket, while keeping the first-year head coach suspended through the rest of the playoffs. An assistant was moved up to lead the team on an interim basis.
Since then, Myrtle Beach has knocked off higher seeds. The Seahawks edged West Florence 4-3 in the Lower State semifinals, avenging two regular-season losses, and then took the Lower State championship with a 5-0 sweep of Lucy Beckham. The program owns the third-most state titles in league history.
Riverside earned its trip by sweeping Catawba Ridge 6-0 at home in the Upper State final on Wednesday.
