MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Downtown Myrtle Beach has a new, very tall resident. The city unveiled Rabbit Man, a steel sculpture that stands 8.5 feet, on Friday where Fourth Avenue North meets Broadway Street.
The piece is the work of Dale Rogers, a sculptor from Haverhill, Mass., whose pieces have been installed in more than 100 cities. The figure is part rabbit and part man, sporting a bow tie and a walking cane with a cardinal resting on its wrist. It sits beside Gallery 320, a locally owned gallery.
City spokesperson Meredith Denari said the sculpture cost $21,000, and $4,959 from the Public Art Fund went toward installation, including pavers set around the base. The city puts money into that fund every year to cover public art projects like murals and sculptures.
The Cultural Resources Committee backed the project, and the Community Appearance Board signed off on the location on Aug. 20.
The unveiling opened the monthly F1RST Friday Artwalk, a self-guided evening tour of galleries in the Arts and Innovation District, where visitors can catch live music and ride a trolley shuttle at no charge.
