NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Neighbors lined up for fried fish and barbecue Saturday at Ocean Drive Elementary School as the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad kept a fundraising custom alive for the 67th year.
Every dollar from the fish fry goes back into the squad, paying for the gear it buys and maintains along with its outreach work in the community.
The squad is a volunteer nonprofit that was formed in 1958 and covers the city plus the rest of the North Strand. Its EMTs and paramedics give their time, and patients it carries to the hospital are not sent a bill.
Members also lead CPR classes at no cost. The squad says its instructors teach across the Grand Strand, and each month it holds ongoing training for roughly 90 local EMTs, paramedics and firefighters.
The squad typically plans for about 2,000 meals and offers a drive-thru line for diners who stay in their cars. It has already set next year’s fish fry for Saturday, Oct. 23, 2027, with tickets going on sale Aug. 1.
