HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — Horry County residents will get three more chances next month to tell federal reviewers what they think of the shrinking list of routes for the long-planned Highway 22 extension.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will run drop-in scoping sessions from 4 to 6 p.m. three nights in a row. Conway goes first, on Nov. 17 at the Horry County Government and Justice Center. Next comes the James Frazier Community Center on Bucksport Road, followed on the final night by the Myrtle Beach venue, South Strand Recreation Center at 9650 Scipio Lane. Each session covers the same material.

Recorded presentations go online Nov. 3, and written comments will be taken from Nov. 3 through Dec. 4, 2026. The sessions focus on the reasonable alternatives and the extra studies planned for a draft environmental impact statement.

The road, once known as the Southern Evacuation Lifeline, is meant to speed hurricane evacuations, ease congestion and improve access on both sides of the Waccamaw River. Its price tag stands at $1.56 billion, paid through the county RIDE 4 program.

Planners have whittled 22 possible routes down to 15 after a second screening, and fewer than that will be discussed at the meetings. Construction is not expected to start until 2030.
