LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — The first Wawa in South Carolina moved a step closer Thursday when the Horry County Planning Commission voted without dissent to back a land use change for a site in Little River.
The convenience store would sit where Water Grande Boulevard meets S.C. Highway 9, with gas pumps and a car wash. Developers told the panel that Wawa is the applicant and that the change was needed to allow underground fuel tanks. The amendment applies to the River Grand Planned Development District, and the paperwork was filed by WW LLC acting for Baytree SC LLC.
Neighbors, many from the Bridgewater community, packed the meeting to oppose the plan. They raised worries about added traffic at a busy intersection, strained roads and public safety. Commission Chair Hunter Platt cautioned the crowd after repeated outbursts, and Horry County Police were asked to clear the room once shouting broke out after the vote.
The Pennsylvania-based chain is known for its made-to-order sandwiches. The proposal still needs three readings before Horry County Council, and final approval is not expected until next year.
