Christopher Nolan’s epic film, The Odyssey, will be available for rent and purchase on digital platforms starting November 17. The movie will also launch on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on the same date. This home release follows its theatrical debut on July 17, marking a four-month exclusive theatrical window, which is a longer period than many major studio releases typically observe. Nolan and Universal previously used a similar strategy for Oppenheimer, which remained in theaters for 123 days before its premium video-on-demand and physical media release in November 2023.
The Odyssey has achieved significant box office success, grossing approximately $1.35 billion worldwide. This makes it Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date and, as of this week, the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine. Domestically, the film has earned over $500 million. IMAX screenings alone contributed a substantial $257 million in ticket sales, establishing The Odyssey as IMAX’s highest-grossing release ever.
The film features Matt Damon in the lead role as Odysseus, the Greek king embarking on a perilous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The extensive cast also includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. A review of the film noted its muscular and temporally complex interpretation, highlighting that there is rarely a dull moment. While praising Damon’s performance as the wandering king, the review suggested the film is more sensually than emotionally impactful.
While the Blu-ray/DVD pre-order information is expected soon, the official Christopher Nolan screenplay for The Odyssey is currently available for purchase, along with a hardcover book detailing the making of the film.
